Why Mobile phone without IMEI are going to be blocked?

Indian Government has decided to block mobile handsets without genuine IMEI. This is the why people having mostly Chinese mobile handsets are worried as they don't have genuine IMEIs. Without genuine IMEI is it not possible to track down as mobile phone, which is very harmful for a terror targeted country like India.

What is IMEI in GSM mobile phones?

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of a mobile handset is a 15 digit number unique to a mobile handset. Just dial *#06# on your mobile phone and 15 digit IMEI will display on your handset. Each GSM phone has its unique IMEI.

How does it help?

It can help in many ways. E.g. If you lost your handset, the theif can enjoy facilities of the handset and anyone can use it easily. But if you know IMEI of your handset, you can send that thief inside the bars and get your mobile phone back. Just tell your service provider about the IMEI of your lost handset. There they have EIR (Equipment Identity Register). The EIR has three categories namely the "white lists", "Grey lists" and "black lists". The operator can block a handset by putting it in black list.
